In the beginning, the Mongols were different groups ofpeople who moved around morden-day Argun Rver. Theywere men and women who rode from place to place to lookfor food for their animals. They lived in warm tents calledgers which were made from animal skins.

The great Mongol leader Genghis Khan brought togetherthese different Mongol groups in 1206, and took controlof the north of China and much of Central Asia in half

century. By the time of Genghis Khan's grandson KublaKhan, the Mongols ruled a huge empire. It went from theSea of Japan in the east to modern-day Turkey and Hungaryin the west. It was the largest land empire of all time. Just200,000 Mongols ruled more than 100 millhon people. Theempire went across 22 per cent of the world's land!There were five different areas of the Mongol Empiuee at thstime, and Kublai Khan ruled over the Empire of the Great Khan.This went across most of Siberia in the north and down throughChina to the modern-day country of Myanmar in the south.
